Extend
your spring cleaning to include your plumbing and gas fittings and
appliances. Check your kitchen, bathrooms and other locations around your home to ensure there are no leaks, blockages or other faults.
In
the kitchen
- Check taps for any leaks. Repairing leaks will save water and money
- Make sure you have strainers on your drains
- Check undersink cupboards for any signs of leaks
- Check the water supply hose on your dishwasher for any leaks or wear
In the bathroom
- Check leaking taps for any leaks
- Check
for leaking toilet cisterns. Add a few drops of food colouring to the
water in the tank; if there are any leaks the coloured water will show
in the bowl in half and hour
- While you're there, look for any cracks or leaks in the toilet bowl
- Turn the water supply valves on and off a couple ot fimes to prevent them from sticking
- Check the flusher, if it sticks or needs a thump, it probably needs replacing
- Clean the showerhead with vinegar to get rid of any mineral deposits
- Check undersink cupboards for any signs of leaks
Outdoors
- Make sure your gutters and drains are free of debris
- Check your outdoor taps, hoses and connections to ensure they are working properly
- If your garden has a water feature, check for leaks or blockages
- Examine the condition of all pipes and seals to your swimming pool
